Skin Cancer Awareness Month: Why SPF alone isn't enough to protect your skin this summer
Skin Cancer Awareness Month reminds us that protecting our skin is not just about maintaining a youthful glow but is also about safeguarding our long-term health. Many people only tend to use sunscreen as temperatures rise and when the days are brighter, however it is important to understand that SPF alone is not enough to fully protect your skin from sun damage.

Understanding what SPF really does
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays, the type which are primarily responsible for causing sunburn and contributing to skin cancer. Many people assume that a high SPF offers complete protection, but unless your sunscreen is labelled "broad-spectrum", you may not be adequately shielded from UVB and UVA damage.
There are two main types of ultraviolet radiation that affects our skin:
UVB rays: which cause sunburn and direct DNA damage
UVA rays: these penetrate deeper into the skin and accelerate ageing as well as can contribute to skin cancer.
Why sunscreen alone can fall short
Even when using a high quality, broad-spectrum SPF, there are several reasons why sunscreen alone isn't enough to adequately protect our skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays:
Application is often inadequate: most people apply less than half the recommended amount of sunscreen which significantly reduces its effectiveness.
Reapplication is often overlooked: SPF should be reapplied every two hours and more frequently if you are swimming or sweating which rarely happens.
Missed areas are common: Ears, lips, eyelids, the scalp and the backs of hands are frequently forgotten and leaving them vulnerable to damage.
no sunscreen blocks all UV rays: Even SPF50 filters around 98% of UVB rays meaning that some exposure still occurs.
A holistic approach to sun protection
To truly protect your skin, it is vital to think beyond sunscreen and take a more layered approach for effective sun protection:
Wear protective clothing such as lightweight, long-sleeved fabrics, hats and UV protective sunglasses which all provide a physical barrier against harmful rays.
Seek shade appropriately and avoid direct sun exposure between 11am and 3pm when UV radiation is at its strongest.
Use antioxidants in your topical skincare such as Vitamin C which can help to neutralise free radicals generated by UV exposure.
Don't forget all year round, daily protection even on cloudy and overcast days as UV rays can still penetrate through these.
