Dr Christine Or reveals what Dermal Filler Treatments can do, and what they can't

Dermal filler treatments are one of the most talked about aesthetic treatments, and one of the most misunderstood. If they are carried out by a professional aesthetic doctor or skin specialist they have huge benefits, such as subtly restoring balance to the face, softening signs of ageing and helping you to look fresher and more confident. However, when expectations aren't clear, some patients can be left feeling disappointed.

In this blog, award-winning Aesthetic Doctor and skin health specialist, Dr Christine Or reveals what dermal fillers can do, and what they can't.

What are Dermal Filler treatments?

Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers are injectable treatments that are manufactured by cross-linking Hyaluronic acid to produce a clear sterile gel for injection into the skin. Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in all skin and soft tissues throughout the body. It attracts and binds water in the skin, providing volume and hydration, but also "cushioning" and supporting collagen and elastin fibres and allows cells to communicate with each other.

What Dermal Fillers Can Do

Dermal filler treatments are used to restore volume, support facial structure, soften fine lines, and enhance natural features in a beautifully subtle way. Dr Christine's philosophy is "less is more" when it comes to aesthetic treatments like dermal filler treatments, and she is passionate about creating a natural enhancement that is in harmony with the whole face. Dermal filler treatments have many benefits to help the face look fresher, more balanced and rested:

  • Create and restore lost volume and contour gently and naturally: as we age, we begin to lose collagen, fat and bone structure in the face. Dermal fillers can help to restore this lost volume in areas such as the cheeks, temples, jawline, and chin, and when used conservatively, restores structure and support without changing who you are.

  • Soften lines and folds: filler treatments can soften the deeper lines in our face including nose to mouth folds (nasolabial folds) and lines below the mouth (marionette lines). Rather than "filling lines', they support the surrounding tissue which allows the skin to sit more smoothly and naturally.

  • Enhance facial balance and proportion: if administered correctly and subtly, dermal fillers can improve facial harmony by refining the chin or jawline, replacing volume loss in the temples, improving the balance of your facial profile and enhancing, defining and correcting lips, naturally.

What Dermal Fillers Can't Do

Dermal filler treatments have many anti-ageing benefits but cannot completely stop the ageing process. This is because the results of treatment are temporary and gradually break down over time. They are also not advised to address certain skin concerns or issues, or if you wish to dramatically change how you look, as they are designed to enhance and support your natural features rather than completely transforming them:

  • They can't stop the ageing process: whilst dermal fillers are beneficial to soften the visible signs of ageing such as lines and folds, they cannot stop time. The face continues to lose volume with ageing and the skin loses collagen as we age due to genetics, lifestyle choices, hormones and environmental stressors, which is why these treatments should be part of a personalised and longer-term skin health plan, instead of just one-off treatments.

  • They can't fix everything in one treatment: some patients can become disappointed when one dermal filler treatment doesn't address every concern. The best results come from a tailored treatment plan with a combination of approaches to treat the face holistically and to ensure the results are beautifully natural and subtle.

  • They shouldn't dramatically change how you look: Dr Christine believes in a "less is more" approach to aesthetics treatments, so dermal fillers are not recommended if you wish to dramatically change your look or look "done." Instead, dermal fillers should help you look and feel the best and most confident version of yourself.

Why does expertise matter?

Dermal filler treatments are medical procedures and because every face is unique, it is important to firstly have a consultation with a qualified professional to determine whether the treatment is right for you. When used correctly, they can be greatly beneficial to enhance natural facial features, restore balance and give you the confidence you deserve.
