How to know if you are a suitable candidate for RF Microneedling
Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling is an advanced, collagen stimulating treatment that has become increasingly popular for improving skin texture, firmness and overall quality. It is often recommended for those patients seeking visible skin rejuvenation with minimal downtime. However, as with any aesthetic treatment, it is important to determine whether it is the right treatment choice for you.
In this blog, award-winning Aesthetic Doctor and skin health specialist, Dr Christine Or explains how RF Microneedling works and how to know if you are a suitable candidate for RF Microneedling to determine its suitability for your skin goals or concerns.
What is RF Microneedling?
Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling is an advanced treatment combining both medical microneedling and radiofrequency to rejuvenate the skin by stimulating the body’s natural healing process to encourage collagen production of the dermis resulting in anti-ageing and skin tightening.
The radio-frequency energy is delivered through gold plated insulated needles allowing precise delivery to the dermis, heating the collagen fibres to 55°C-65°C. This causes contraction and trauma to the tissue and stimulates fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin which strengthens and tightens the skin.
RF Microneedling is particularly effective for:
Fine lines and wrinkles
Skin laxity and loss of firmness
Acne scarring and skin texture concerns
Enlarged pores
An uneven skin tone
Who is an ideal candidate for RF Microneedling?
RF Microneedling is suitable for most skin types and tones, making it a popular and versatile treatment for many patients. You may be a suitable candidate for RF Microneedling if you:
Are noticing early to moderate signs of ageing such as fine lines or mild skin laxity
Have acne scarring or uneven skin texture
Would like to improve skin firmness and quality without surgery
Are seeking natural results and minimal downtime after treatment
Are happy to see gradual results over time.
When RF Microneedling may not be suitable
Since RF Microneedling relies upon natural processes and causes only micro fine, controlled injury to the skin, it is considered a very safe treatment. However, it may not be appropriate if you:
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have any current skin infections, inflammation or open wounds in the treatment area
Have any medical conditions that would impair wound healing
Have a heart condition including pacemaker or metal implant.
Suffer from a bleeding disorder or take blood thinning medication
Are prone to hyperpigmentation or keloid scarring
Are unwell, including colds, coughs, and sore throats.
What results can you expect?
It is important for patients to note that results do not appear instantly after having an RF Microneedling treatment and for up to 24 hours after the treatment you may experience skin redness, some bruising and mild swelling.
The optimum result is achieved over a course of treatments and over a period of months. Depending on the treatment indications a course of 3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is usually recommended.
Most patients report a noticeable improvement after the first two weeks and report skin feels smoother, softer and looks fresher, but the real changes occur from about 12 weeks. Skin quality continues to improve for up to 9 months and a top up treatment is recommended every 6 to 12 months.
