How to know if you are a suitable candidate for Polynucleotides
Polynucleotides continue to be a popular treatment in aesthetic medicine due to their ability to improve and rejuvenate skin from within and support skin regeneration for a healthy-looking complexion.
In this blog, award-winning Dr Christine Or, who has built her reputation as a skin health specialist and aesthetic doctor, explains what polynucleotides do, who they are suitable for, and when they may not be the right choice, so you are able to make an informed and confident decision about whether this treatment is right for you.
What are Polynucleotides?
DNA and RNA are two examples of polynucleotides. The polynucleotides used in cosmetic medicine to remodel the skin are made up of highly purified fragments of DNA extracted from wild salmon or trout sperm. The trout used are the same as used for food. Salmon and trout sperm DNA closely resembles human DNA.
Polynucleotides stimulate skin repair and regeneration, helping to improve skin hydration, elasticity, texture and overall resilience by supporting fibroblast activity and improving the skin's microenvironment.
It is important to note that rather than changing the volume or shape of your face, Polynucleotides work to enhance skin quality and are a popular choice for those who are seeking subtle skin rejuvenation and natural results.
Am I a suitable candidate for Polynucleotides?
Polynucleotides are a versatile and effective treatment for those candidates who:
Want to improve skin quality rather than add volume: If you are concerned about dullness, fine lines or loss of elasticity in the skin, polynucleotides can help you achieve more hydrated skin for a fresh and youthful look without altering facial structure.
Prefer natural results: Polynucleotides work with your skin's own repair mechanisms, so it is an ideal treatment for those who want subtle and progressive improvements rather than immediate or dramatic change.
Are noticing early signs of ageing: This treatment is particularly effective in treating fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles. and tired skin, helping to combat the early signs of ageing.
Have delicate or thin skin: Polynucleotides can treat delicate or thin areas of skin which other treatments sometimes can't, particularly those areas under the eyes, neck, chest, and hands.
Have dehydrated or stressed skin: If your skin has been affected by sun exposure, pollution, or lifestyle stress, polynucleotides can help to restore balance and resilience to your skin.
Have recently had a traumatic injury or surgery: The use of polynucleotides in regenerative medicine is well established in tissue repair following an injury or surgery.
When Polynucleotides may not be the best treatment option
Polynucleotides are a highly effective treatment to combat a range of skin concerns, however they may not be the most appropriate treatment if:
You have a very low pain tolerance: A topical anaesthetic cream will be applied before treatment to numb the skin, but the treatment itself can be uncomfortable.
You are pregnant or breastfeeding: This treatment is not advised for those women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
You are looking for immediate or dramatic results: If you are looking for volume, facial contouring or lifting, dermal filler treatments may be more suitable than polynucleotides.
You have important social events straight after your treatment: After treatment it is likely there will be redness, pinprick marks and small bumps just under the skin that will be visible and may take from 3-12 hours to settle. In addition, you will have some swelling in the injected areas which can take 2 to 3 days to settle. Bruising may be more apparent the next day and can take up to 10-14 days to resolve so please ensure that you have no important social events in the 2 weeks after your treatment.
You do not wish to maintain the results: Longevity of treatment does vary between individuals. Polynucleotides do not arrest the ageing process, therefore a maintenance treatment is recommended every six months. Life-style factors can affect longevity. If you choose not to maintain the results with further treatment, your skin will return to its pre-treatment state over time.
A consultation with a qualified Aesthetic doctor or skin expert is essential to assess your suitability for the treatment and so it can be tailored to your specific skin concerns and goals.
What results can you expect after treatment?
Polynucleotides work at a cellular level so results can usually be seen around a month after your last treatment and continue to improve over the next few months. The skin in the treated areas will appear less dull and lined as collagen production is stimulated. The redness of Rosacea may reduce and areas where the skin has been damaged e.g. sun damage, old acne or scarring may repair and improve. When treating the eye area, the skin around the eye area may appear brighter, reducing the tired look of dark circles under the eye, and there may be fewer wrinkles and fine lines.
