Rosacea Awareness Month: Understanding Your Skin and How to Manage It

April marks Rosacea Awareness Month which is a time to raise awareness and understanding of a common yet often misunderstood condition that affects many people. Unfortunately, rosacea can have a significant impact on not only our skin, but also our confidence and overall wellbeing.

Rosacea management requires a personalised approach and in this blog, award-winning Aesthetic Doctor and skin health specialist, Dr Christine Or advises on holistic treatment plans to help manage rosacea. They focus on calming inflammation, strengthening the skin barrier and reducing triggers, so her patients achieve healthier and more balanced skin over time.

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition which mostly affects the face including our cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. Rosacea can present in several ways such as:

  • Persistent redness or flushing in our face

  • Visible blood vessels (thread veins)

  • Spots or pustules

  • Skin sensitivity or a burning sensation

These symptoms can fluctuate and are often triggered by environmental and lifestyle factors such a s sun exposure, changes in temperature, stress, spicy foods and alcohol.

What causes rosacea?

Whilst the exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, there are several contributing factors which are known to play a role:

  • Skin barrier dysfunction: a weakened skin barrier makes the skin more sensitive and reactive to external triggers,

  • Inflammation: chronic inflammation is at the core of rosacea which can lead to redness and irritation of the skin.

  • Genetics: there is often a hereditary component which means that rosacea can run in families.

  • Demodex Mites: an overgrowth of naturally occurring Demodex mites on the skin can contribute to inflammation and flare-ups in some patients.

Medical-grade skincare support

A consistent and gentle skincare routine is essential for managing rosacea-prone skin, and I advise my patients to use products that soothe, hydrate and protect the skin without causing irritation:

  • AlumierMD Sensicalm Cleanser: this product is great for daily use as it gently cleanses and soothes sensitive skin whilst maintaining hydration.

  • AlumierMD Hydracalm Moisturiser: this is a nourishing moisturiser that helps to reduce redness and restore comfort by supporting a stronger and more resilient skin barrier.

  • AlumierMD Sheer Hydration Broad Spectrum SPF30: daily sun protection is essential for rosacea management, and this lightweight SPF hydrates whilst protecting the skin against UV exposure which is often a trigger for flare-ups.

In-clinic treatments for rosacea

As well as a tailored skincare routine, in-clinic treatments can play a valuable role in managing rosacea and improving overall skin health, and many of my patients benefit from:

  • Dermalux FLex LED Phototherapy: a gentle and non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to calm inflammation and support skin healing. It helps to reduce redness and strengthens the skin barrier, which is beneficial for patients with sensitive, rosacea-prone skin.

  • Polynucleotides: these treatments are an advanced regenerative option to repair and restore the skin at a cellular level. They help to improve hydration, reduce inflammation and support tissue healing, a great option for calming reactive and compromised skin.

Prescription treatments and clinical support

For those patients who have more persistent or moderate rosacea, prescription treatments can play an important role in managing this skin condition. These may include topical or oral medications to reduce inflammation, treatments that specifically target Demodex mites to help control flare-ups, and targeted treatments to calm redness and improve skin clarity. Always consult an Aesthetic Doctor or skin specialist to ensure a safe and effective approach that is tailored to your skin.

Lifestyle management

Understanding and managing your key triggers is an effective way of controlling rosacea as small, consistent changes can make a significant difference over time. These may include:

  • Wearing SPF daily to minimise UV exposure and control flare-ups

  • Avoiding extreme temperatures which can trigger rosacea

  • Identifying any diet or lifestyle triggers

  • Using gentle, non-irritating skincare products

Rosacea is a long-term skin condition which can be successfully managed with a personalised approach. By combining medical-grade skincare, prescription treatments where appropriate and lifestyle changes, can all help to control rosacea and help you feel more confident in your skin.
