The most effective aesthetic treatments to have in your 50's to achieve anti-ageing results.

Reaching our 50's should be an empowering chapter and a time of confidence, experience and being comfortable in our own skin. However, when our skin begins to show more visible signs of ageing, this can often lead to a decline in our confidence and self-esteem. Our complexion can look dry and dull thanks to a reduction in our collagen and elastin levels, and our natural glow can start to fade. In addition we lose volume in the face and the cumulative effects of UV damage over the years lead to pigmentation and uneven skin tone.

However, there are many innovative and results-led regenerative treatments and skincare products to refresh, lift and rejuvenate the face that offer subtle enhancements for natural results. In this blog, award-winning Dr Christine Or, explores some of the most effective treatments for women (and men) in their midlife to help them look and feel their most confident selves.

Skin Boosters

As we age, the skin loses collagen and elastin leading to crepiness, fine lines and lack of skin structure and support. Skin hydration and elasticity decrease resulting in dull skin and fine lines.

Skin Boosters such as Profhilo deliver hyaluronic acid deep into the skin to improve elasticity, hydration and radiance from within. Profhilo is an award-winning injectable hyaluronic acid which is unique because it flows under the skin, acting like a moisturiser, and distributing pure hyaluronic acid to all areas to deeply hydrate the skin. In addition, it also stimulates collagen production in the skin leading to further improvement in skin quality, plumpness, elasticity and firmness. It is great for treating crepiness of the skin and skin will feel smoother and regain a natural glow.

Profhilo is great for improving skin quality on the face, neck, decolletage, backs of hands and upper arms. Two treatments are needed spaced 4 weeks apart with maintenance treatments every 3-6 months. The results are gradual over the weeks following treatment as the hyaluronic acid gel gets to work, binding with water to bring lasting hydration and stimulating collagen production to improve your skin's elasticity and smoothness.

Advanced Skin Tightening

Collagen is a protein providing structural support to the skin. We lose 1% of collagen per year from our later 20's and then a further 30% over 2 years during the menopause. Lack of collagen with ageing leads to fine lines, wrinkles and sagginess of the skin and can be particularly noticeable in the neck as well as the face and upper arms.

Energy-based treatments such as Radiofrequency Microneedling are a great way to help tighten the skin to reduce fine lines and reduce the signs of ageing. It is an advanced treatment combining both medical microneedling and radiofrequency to rejuvenate the skin by stimulating the body’s natural healing process to encourage collagen production of the dermis resulting in anti-ageing and skin tightening. The radio-frequency energy is delivered through gold plated insulated needles allowing precise delivery to the dermis, heating the collagen fibres to 55°C-65°C. This causes contraction and trauma to the tissue and stimulates fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin which strengthens and tightens the skin.

Radiofrequency Microneedling can also help to soften pigmentation from UV damage over the years and treats poor skin texture, fine lines, scarring and stretch marks. The optimum result is achieved over a course of 3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

Non-Surgical Facelift

During our midlife, we begin to lose elasticity in the skin and gravity draws the skin downwards causing it to sag and making us appear older.

Dr Christine is proud to offer the innovative EMface treatment, the first and only needle-free procedure to treat facial skin and muscles in just a 20-minute session, using synchronised RF and HIFES technology. It is a must-have treatment for anyone who wants to improve the overall appearance of their skin and reduce signs of ageing without needles, downtime, or pain. Using proven RF and HIFES technologies, EMface can lift, tone and rejuvenate the skin resulting in less wrinkles and more lift, naturally.

EMface may improve definition of the cheeks and the jawline, reduce jowls, and tackle wrinkles and signs of ageing. EMface Submentum can treat a double chin and EMface Eyes can treat the eye area to reduce eye bags and dark circles. The optimum result is achieved over course of 4 treatments spaced a week apart, however some patients will benefit from a further 2 treatments. For best results, Dr Christine recommends combining EMface with Dermal Filler as part of her 8 point lift treatment, which uses the most advanced dermal filler techniques to volumise and subtly lift the face to create a rejuvenated, fresher and more youthful appearance

Dermal Filler Treatment

In our 50's, we start to see a loss of volume in our faces, particularly around the midface and cheeks, leading to heaviness of the lower face, loss of jawline definition and jowls.

Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers can be injected into the skin to provide instant correction and support, gently restoring the lost structure and contour, whilst still maintaining a natural and soft appearance. Dr Christine believes in a "less is more approach" to aesthetic treatments that subtly enhance rather than look "too done" and dermal filler treatments can be tailored to balance and rejuvenate your overall appearance, instead of completely changing it. As well as being used to create volume and contour to the face, dermal filler can be used to instantly soften deep folds such as nose to mouth folds (nasolabial folds) and lines below the mouth (marionette lines). They can also be used to replace volume loss in the lips to add a little more subtle definition and enhance the lips.

Regenerative Skin Therapy

As we age, our skin can become dull and lacklustre due to the natural decline in cellular turnover, leaving dead skin cells on the surface. This is compounded by a decrease in collagen and elastin production as well as hormones playing a significant role in the health and appearance of our skin.

Regenerative treatments aim to stimulate the skin's natural healing and repair processes. Polynucleotides have been a buzz word in the aesthetics industry for a while now and are an innovative skin rejuvenation treatment for anti-ageing. They utilise injectable chains of nucleotides - the building blocks of DNA and RNA, to stimulate cell regeneration and repair. Not only do these powerhouses enhance skin health by boosting collagen and elastin production, but they also work to improve skin hydration and reduce inflammation, as well as addressing various skin concerns such as wrinkles, dark circles and uneven skin tone. Other skin boosters such as Sunekos also help to encourage the skin to regenerate.

Longevity of treatment does vary between individuals. Polynucleotides do not arrest the ageing process; therefore a maintenance treatment is recommended every six months. Lifestyle factors can affect longevity, and if you choose not to maintain the results with further treatment, your skin will return to its pre-treatment state over time.

Medical Grade Skincare

Years of sun exposure can often lead to hyperpigmentation such as age spots appearing on the skin. In-clinic treatments are highly effective to correct uneven skin tone and combat the signs of ageing in your 50's, but it is essential to combine them with an at-home medical-grade skincare regime to boost and prolong the results of your treatment. Choose products with active ingredients such as retinol, peptides, antioxidants and growth factors, and ensure these are tailored to your specific skin concerns. Dr Christine recommends Obagi Medical Prescription Skincare which is the Gold Standard in treating skin problems such as sun damage and uneven skin pigmentation. It is prescription only following a medical consultation with Dr Christine.
