What are Polynucleotides? What is involved, is it painful and what are the benefits.

Updated: Aug 16

The 8 point lift, also known as a "non-surgical facelift" or "liquid face lift."
Polynucleotides skin booster treatment.

Polynucleotides have been a buzz word in the aesthetics industry for a while now, and are a new and innovative skin rejuvenation treatment for anti-ageing. They utilise injectable chains of nucleotides - the building blocks of DNA and RNA, to stimulate cell regeneration and repair. Not only do these powerhouses enhance skin health by boosting collagen and elastin production, they also work to improve skin hydration and reduce inflammation, as well as addressing various skin concerns such as wrinkles, dark circles and uneven skin tone.

What are Polynucleotides?

DNA and RNA are two examples of polynucleotides. The polynucleotides used in cosmetic medicine to remodel the skin are made up of highly purified fragments of DNA extracted from wild salmon or trout sperm. The trout used are the same as used for food. Salmon and trout sperm DNA closely resembles human DNA.

How do Polynucleotides work?

Polynucleotides stimulate a receptor on cells which positively influences the following:

  • Cell proliferation

  • The repair and regenerative actions of fibroblast cells

  • The production of collagen and elastin

  • The production of hyaluronic acid

  • The production of healthy new micro-blood vessels

  • The function of melanocytes which produce pigment.

  • They reduce inflammation

  • Regulate water balance

  • Regulate the formation of fat cells

  • Regenerate hair follicles

What are the benefits of Polynucleotides?

  • Improves skin texture and tone: Polynucleotides stimulate the skin's natural ability to regenerate cells leading to improved skin texture and tone.

  • Improves skin elasticity and firmness: Polynucleotides activate fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, which are crucial for skin elasticity and firmness.

  • Improves skin hydration: Polynucleotides enhance the skin's ability to retain moisture, resulting in a more radiant and hydrated complexion.

  • Reduces inflammation: Polynucleotides have anti-inflammatory properties helping to improve skin conditions such as rosacea and other skin sensitivities.

  • Supports overall skin health: Polynucleotides promote angiogenesis, which improves blood flow and nutrient delivery to skin cells, further supporting skin health.

What is it used to treat?

  • Dull skin

  • Course skin

  • Wrinkles

  • Uneven pigmentation

  • Redness

  • Dark circles

  • Acne scarring

  • Stretch marks

  • Surgical scarring

  • Hair loss

  • Particularly popular for treating the eye area where the skin is thin

  • Not just for the face; poluynulceotides can be used to treat the hands, neck, chest, arms, knees. In fact any skin, anywhere on the body.

What is involved?

Before treatment, you will have a consultation to assess your skin concerns and discuss your goals. It is important you tell your practitioner about any medicines or dietary supplements you are taking, as some medicines can increase your risk of bruising.

If you are taking supplements such as Vitamin A, C or E, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, fish oils, St. Johns Wort or some pain killing medicines such as aspirin or ibuprofen, then these can increase your risk of bruising and it may be advisable to stop taking them a few days before your treatment. It is also advisable that you do not drink alcohol for a few days before and after your treatment, for the same reason.

You should attend clinic with no make up ready for your treatment and should not apply make up for 24 hours after your treatment in order to reduce the risk of infection or irritation at the injection sites.

During the treatment, Polynucleotides are injected into the targeted areas using a fine needle or sometimes a cannula. After treatment you may continue with normal activities, but it is likely there will be redness, pinprick marks and small bumps just under the skin that will be visible and may take from 3-12 hours to settle. In addition you will have some swelling in the injected areas which can take 2 to 3 days to settle. Bruising may be more apparent the next day and can take up to 10-14 days to resolve so please ensure that you have no important social events in the 2 weeks after your treatment.

For best results, you will usually require 3 treatments spaced around 3 weeks apart.

Are Polynucleotides painful?

Treatment can be uncomfortable and feel stingy. A topical anaesthetic cream will be applied before treatment to numb the skin to reduce discomfort.

Expected results

Results from polynucleotide treatment can usually be seen around a month after your last treatment and continue to improve over the next few months. The skin in the treated areas will appear less dull and lined as collagen production is stimulated. The redness of Rosacea may reduce and areas where the skin has been damaged e.g. sun damage, old acne or scarring may repair and improve.

When treating the eye area, the skin around the eye area may appear brighter, reducing the tired look of dark circles under the eye, and there may be fewer wrinkles and fine lines.

Longevity of treatment does vary between individuals but typically last around 6 to 9 months. Polynucleotides do not arrest the ageing process, therefore a maintenance treatment is recommended every 6 months. Lifestyle factors can affect longevity. If you choose not to maintain the results with further treatment, your skin will return to its pre-treatment state over time.

Polynucleotides Aftercare

For at least 6 hours after treatment:

  • Keep your hands clean and avoid touching your face

  • Avoid using your mobile phone against the treated area

  • Don’t let pets lick your face

  • Don’t pick or scratch the treated area.

  • Do not wear tight head-gear such as bike or cycle helmets, or riding hats. These will not be clean and may increase the risk of infection.

For at least 24 hours after treatment:

  • Do not wear make up for 24 hours after treatment

  • It is advisable to avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen and fish oil as these can increase the risk of bruising

  • Avoid extremes of heat or cold or vigorous exercise, until any swelling, bruising or tenderness has settled.

  • Swelling may worsen in the first 24 hours, and then should settle within the first few days.
