Skin Boosters vs Dermal Fillers: Which treatment is right for you?
Many of my patients often come to see me when they are seeking a boost in confidence, especially when it comes to radiant and glowing skin. Two of the most popular treatments I offer are Skin Boosters and Dermal Fillers, and while they are both injectable treatments and have many fantastic benefits for the skin, they serve very different purposes, and therefore it is important to understand how they work and who they are most suitable for
In this blog, award-winning Dr Christine Or, explores one of the most common questions she hears in her clinic is, "Which treatment is right for me?" so you are able to make the best treatment choice based on your skin goals and the results that you wish to achieve.
Choose Skin Boosters if...
Your skin has started to look tired, dull or dehydrated, and you're looking for a healthy glow rather than a change in facial shape.
What are Skin Boosters?
Skin Boosters are gentle and hydrating injectable treatments that are designed to enhance the skin from within and improve its overall appearance. Rather than altering facial contours they improve texture, hydration and the health of our skin.
How do Skin Boosters Work?
Skin Boosters deliver hyaluronic acid deep into the skin to improve elasticity, hydration and radiance from within:
Profhilo is an award-winning injectable hyaluronic acid which is unique because it flows under the skin, so it distributes to all areas to deeply hydrate the skin and is often known as the "6-month moisturiser. In addition, it also stimulates collagen production in the skin leading to further improvement in skin quality, elasticity and firmness. Skin will feel smoother and regain a natural glow.
Sunekos is a patented formula of hyaluronic acid and 6 amino acids that regenerates the extracellular matrix to stimulate collagen and elastin.
Polynucleotides work by using DNA fragments to repair and regenerate skin cells, stimulating the skin to produce its own collagen and elastin which improves texture, hydration and elasticity.
Who are they suitable for?
Skin boosters are great for anyone who is seeking radiant, glowing and healthy-looking skin, and are particularly beneficial for those people with:
Dull, dehydrated or lacklustre skin
Early fine lines or those seeking preventative treatments
Skin quality that needs improving on the face, neck, decolletage, backs of hands and upper arms.
Skin boosters are a great treatment for all ages.
They are not suitable for those who are pregnant or breast-feeding.
What results should I expect?
Unlike Dermal Fillers, Skin Boosters work gradually. Improvements develop over the weeks following treatment as hydration increases and the skin's natural regenerative processes are stimulated. Patients often notice that their skin feels smoother, firmer and more luminous, with results that look refreshed rather than obvious.
Choose Dermal Fillers if...
You've noticed changes in facial structure or volume and would like to restore definition while maintaining a natural appearance. As we age, we naturally lose fat, collagen and support within the face. This can lead to flattening of the cheeks, deeper folds around the mouth and a loss of facial definition.
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal Fillers are injectable treatments designed to restore lost volume, enhance facial contours and soften deeper folds or wrinkles. Unlike Skin Boosters, they instantly correct and use a "thicker" Hyaluronic Acid that provides structure and lift beneath the skin.
How do Dermal Fillers Work?
Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in all skin and soft tissues throughout the body. It attracts and binds water in the skin, providing volume and hydration, but also "cushions" and supports collagen and elastin fibres and allows cells to communicate with each other. Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers are manufactured by cross-linking Hyaluronic acid to produce a clear sterile gel and are injected into the skin to provide instant correction and support. Unlike Skin Boosters, fillers gently restore the lost structure and contour, and shape and support the face, whilst maintaining a natural and soft appearance.
Who are they suitable for?
Dermal fillers are suitable for anyone who wants to subtly enhance and rejuvenate their appearance as they can be used to create volume and contour to the face, instantly soften deep folds such as nose to mouth folds (nasolabial folds) and lines below the mouth (marionette lines), and replace volume loss in the lips to add more definition and enhancement. They are ideal for concerns such as:
Facial volume loss
Sagging or loss of definition
Deep lines of folds
Dermal filler treatments are not suitable if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Make sure you have no important social events in the 2 weeks after your treatment and will not be travelling abroad for 2 weeks after your treatment
What results should I expect?
Dermal fillers are injected into the skin to provide instant correction, but the result is usually seen around 3 to 4 weeks after treatment.
Skin Boosters vs Dermal Fillers: Choosing the right treatment
Both Skin Boosters and Dermal Fillers have many great benefits, but they are used to treat entirely different skin concerns. It is important to assess what your skin needs and your desired outcome before choosing either treatment.
If your skin needs a hydration and radiance boost and is looking dull and tired, Skin Boosters are a great treatment to try. For those looking for an instant correction to skin concerns such as volume loss or deep folds or wrinkles, opt for Dermal Fillers.
In many cases, a combination of Skin Boosters and Dermal Fillers offer the most harmonious results as combined they boost both skin quality and facial structure and can achieve beautiful and natural results and subtle enhancements.
